The ten countries that have the highest levels of militarization are Israel, Singapore, Armenia, Jordan, Russia, South Korea, Cyprus, Greece, Azerbaijan and Brunei in the Global Militarization Index.

I came across this report by the Bonn International Center for Conversion (BICC) and it seemed strange to see the lineup of the top militarized countries. The United States (position 31) or China (position 91) are not even close to the Top Ten, while oil-rich Azerbaijan, which spends billions of dollars on modern military equipment is far behind Armenia.

However, the report is considering the total population, the GDP and the expenditures a country is making on the military. This explains why small countries such as Singapore, Armenia or Cyprus are to be found in the world’s top 10 in the GMI.
